ACTUAL GRADE 1 EL CAZADOR COIN PENDANT IN ANTIQUE STYLE BEZEL AND BEAD NECKLACE
On 11th January 1784, El Cazador set sail for New Orleans and was never heard from again. Some historians speculate that had El Cazador made it to New Orleans, and its treasure been able to bolster the economy, Spain might not have given the territory back to France in 1801.
The El Cazador (meaning the Hunter in English) was a Spanish brig that sank in the Gulf of Mexico in 1784. In the 1770’s the Spanish Louisiana Territory’s economy was faltering due to paper money that was not backed by silver or gold.
It left behind a treasure more than 450,000 reales were found in 1993, after having been underwater for more than 200 years. An underwater salvage concern, Marex International Inc of Memphis was hired to explore the site. He used a sonar and a small underwater robot to find the wreck. It took only one hour to locate the target and three days to photograph it.
